On December 29th, Team Sahlen returns to Sebring International Raceway for the 1st time since 2015. This event 3 years ago was the IMSA Continental Tire Challenge Series. In this race, Team Sahlen secured a solid 5th and 6th in the ST Class with their Porsche Caymans. On this end of 2018 event, Team Sahlen will be racing with ChampCar Endurance Series for their Dual 7 hour endures.
For this weekend’s race, Team Sahlen will be debuting their #942 Porsche in the ChampCar Endurance Series. Joe Sahlen shared his thoughts racing the Cayman at Sebring – “This is so much Porsche history at Sebring We are hoping to add a bit the legacy with by racing our Porsche around the fabled airfield. We have tested and raced the Cayman many times before at Sebring, but this will be the 1st time on 200 wear rated tires here, so we will have a lot to learn in a short amount of time.”
Additionally, the team will be campaigning their #943 Mazda RX7 that recently won the ChampCar Pitt Race by a mere 4 feet. Wayne Nonnamaker shared his excitement for the weekend – “I am excited to get back to Sebring. We tested our RX7s at Sebring back in 2014, but a lot has changed in ChampCar since that time. I know that we will have strong competition. Hopefully we can keep turning laps the whole race, and see where we are at come the final hour of the race.”
Joe Nonnamaker commented on racing in December – “In all my years of racing, I have never raced so late in the season. In fact, you can’t get much later than December 30th to be still racing. I am thrilled to be down here racing in Florida, where it is a bit warmer than Ohio.”
Will Nonnamaker has fond memories of racing at Sebring – “My very 1st professional race was at Sebring in 1994. It was a complete downpour, and just surviving that race was a great achievement. As well, my 1st professional victory came here in 1999, when I paired with my brother Wayne to win the ST class in the Continental Tire Series. I really enjoy driving this track. It certainly is a classic, with no other track quite like it.”
Friday will be unloading and registration day for ChampCar teams and racers. Both Saturday and Sunday’s 7 Hour Endurance races will start at 9 am with the checkered flag flying at 4 pm. Log into ChampCar.org for live race timing and scoring.
