In 2005, Team Sahlen's Will Nonnamaker captured the inaugural Bob Akin Sportsman Award. This year, Will's father Joe hope to bring the Award back to the team.
Currently Joe is in 2nd place in the standings with 2020 points. In 1st place is Emil Assentato with 2157.
The Sahlen's 6 Hours at the Glen this weekend marks the 7th event of 13 race season for the ROLEX GT class. This means that Joe is at the halfway point in the season and each race has a bigger and bigger impact on the Award.
The Bob Akin Sportsman Award is unique in the process of awarding points. Drivers must designate themselves as true Sportsman, having not recently made their primary living from being a professional driver. Additionally, Drivers not only receive points based upon their finish, but also by the number of miles they drive in each race. This unique process rewards those drivers who achieve the significant portion of their car's race results.
In 2005, Will won the Bob Akin award over Marc Bunting. The Award went down to the final race of the year at Mexico City. At Mexico City, Will captured a fine 7th place to secure the Award.
