< Back to News Home Wayne Nonnamaker leads Jim Trueman Sportsman Award coming to the Brickyard Grand Prix

Posted (07/23/2013) -

Team Sahlen’s Wayne Nonnamaker continues to retain the lead in the Jim Trueman Sportsman Award for Daytona Prototype Drivers heading into the next ROLEX event that will be held at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Young Nonnamaker took the lead in the standings at the 1st event of the year at the ROLEX 24 Hours at Daytona, and has held onto this lead through the 1st 7 events of the year.  Now with just 5 events left, the push is now on by everyone at Team Sahlen to ensure that Wayne becomes the 1st individual in Grand American ROLEX history to win the Sportsman Award in both the GT class and as well the Daytona Prototype divisions.

“Five races is a lot of racing to go in the season.  I have a strong team around me at Team Sahlen, a great engineer in Kate Crawford, and a super fast teammate in Dane Cameron.  We are going to do everything in our power to bring this thing home.  It will be tough though.  Alex Popow is a strong competitor, and it will be a battle to the finish for this award.” – shared Wayne Nonnamaker

Dane Cameron added his thoughts as well – “I am excited to get to Indy in a Daytona Prototype, I think the layout will make for a good race. We led a few lap there last year in GT and I would love to be able to lead some more! The last lap especially...  We are coming up on the last few races of the year so it's time to put everything we've learned together and perform.”

Team Sahlen will also be entering the #43 – Ketchup racer with the father son duo of Joe & Will Nonnamaker behind the wheel.  Currently Will & Joe are 3rd and 4th in the Jim Trueman Sportsman Standings in the Daytona Prototype Class.

“This event is a 3 hour event.  It should prove interesting as the strategy plays out as this is another 15 minutes longer than our normal events.  Last year we were very competitive in the test day that was in the dry, but the wet race saw contact that put us out of the event.  I am again looking forward to driving on this historic track.  I still remember coming to Indy with my brother in the 60’s, and this excitement is what ignited my passion for racing back then.”  - shared Joe Nonnamaker

The Brickyard Grand Prix at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be held on July 26th, Friday, at 4 pm.  The event will be telecast at 7:30 pm same day coverage on SPEEDTV.
