< Back to News Home Wayne Nonnamaker retains lead in Jim Trueman Sportsman Award coming into Detroit weekend

Wayne Nonnamaker is on a quest to set a mark in the Grand American ROLEX series that has yet to be reached by any other Sportsman Driver.  In 2011, Wayne won the Bob Akin Sportsman Award for the Grand Touring class.  Currently after 4 of 12 events in 2013,  Wayne is leading the Jim Trueman Sportsman Award for Daytona Prototypes class.  If Wayne can retain that lead through the rest of the season, he will become the very 1st recipient of both the GT and DP Sportsman Awards.  This would be quite an accomplishment to have reach this milestone in such diverse types of race cars.  Wayne though is no stranger to succeeding in diverse styles of machinery.  Back in 2002 and 2003, Wayne won the Driver’s Title in the Grand American Continental Tire Series in the ST  and GS class respectively.

Ironically, one of Wayne’s main competition for the Jim Trueman Award in 2013 is none other than his brother Will.  And to lay even more drama into the mix, Will is the 2005 Bob Akin Sportsman Award winner in GT.  Thus, there is a good chance that one of the two brothers will achieve the mark of winning the Sportsman Award in both classes.

“It is a real honor to be mentioned in the same breath as such luminaries of our sports car world as Bob Akin and Jim Trueman.  It is still a long ways to go in the season, but it is certainly one of the team’s goals to achieve this mark for Sahlen’s” – shared Wayne Nonnamaker

For this weekend’s event at the Belle Isle circuit in Downtown Detroit, Wayne will co-drive with his teammate Dane Cameron.  Dane shares his thoughts leading into the weekend, - “Detroit should be fun, I love street circuits and I really enjoyed the event last year. This will be our first try as a team with a Daytona prototype on a street course so it's hard to know what to expect, but I can't wait.”

The Grand-Am 200 at Belle Isle will be the on June 1st at 12:25 pm.  The race will be taped delayed same day coverage at 5 pm.
