The much anticipated announcement of the tenth race of the year for the Grand Am Cup Series came out today. Roger Edmondson revealed that the event will be at Mid Ohio in conjunction with the CART series on August 8th through the 11th. It will fall as the sixth race of the ten race season. For Nonnamaker Racing, the race means a lot as the team is based only an hour away from the facility.
"This race is so great for us!" commented Joe Nonnamer, the eldest of the Nonnamaker drivers. "With the race being on Saturday afternoon, we will be having a large cookout in our paddock after the race, and many of our family and friends will be at the track. I am so excited to get to go back to Mid Ohio once again!"
"At the beginning of the year we promised our fans and competitors a 10-race season. We are pleased to be able to have Mid-Ohio round out our schedule," Edmondson remarked. "The CART Grand Prix will be a wonderful opportunity for our teams to return to Mid-Ohio and race in front a large crowd."
Grand-Am Cup will run a 2.5-hour race on Mid-Ohio's 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course on Saturday, Aug. 10 immediately following Champ car qualifying for the CART Grand Prix. The street stock series race is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET. Qualifying for the race will be held on Friday, Aug. 9 at 4:45 p.m.
Early reactions from competitors seemed to be positive. "Our team is obviously a little biased about this being a good thing as our home base is located only an hour away from the track," commented Wayne Nonnamaker, driver of the HRPWorld.com Racing Team that competes in the Sports Touring I and II classes. "Grand Am has paired us up with some of the premier series in America. Already this year we have run as a support series to the Rolex Series and the IRL series. Running with CART means we will be able to promote our sponsors get even that much more of a broad exposure. I think it is a great addition to the schedule."
