The Western New York Flash of the Women’s Premiere Soccer League Elite (WPSL) defeated the New England Mutiny 3-1 at Sahlen Stadium, Saturday night in front of a crowd of 753.

The Flash had chances early on from Captain McCall Zerboni and Jamaican international Omolyn Davis, but failed to capitalize. It wasn’t until the 24th minute that rookie, Katy Frierson, pulled a Maradona-inspired turn to avoid attacking defenders and put a shot away in the top left corner of the goal.

“I thought I was in a bad situation and tried to get out of it,” Frierson said about the move. “It feels great to score for the team.”

Davis made a run into the box with some moves of her own before crossing and luring Mutiny keeper, Alonzo off her line.

After some scrambling in the box, the Flash’s Adriana made a simple pass back to Zerboni, who scored in the 31st minute.

Alonzo made diving saves throughout the game, keeping more Flash goals from going in. The next goal for the Flash wouldn’t come until the second half in the 76th minute. Stephanie Ochs, who heads to Norway tomorrow to play with the USWNT U-23 team, crossed a ball to Australian Emily VanEgmond who headed it in.

The Flash gave up its only goal in the 82nd minute when Mutiny player, Kate Howarth, scored.

WNY Flash coach, Aaran Lines, said that he’s happy with the three points his team earned tonight.

“It was a good performance,” Lines said.

Captain Zerboni said that the win is much needed going into the next several games.

“We’re going into Wednesday with good momentum.”

The next game for the Flash takes place at Sahlen Stadium, 460 Oak Street, Rochester, on Wednesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. versus the Chicago Red Stars. All WNY Flash home games this season will be broadcast online at livesportsvideo.com

The Flash are now 2-2-1.
