Team Sahlen came to the “Roar before the 24” with a dual focus of working out the kinks in the new Paddle Shifter system, and to work finding a comfortable race set up for the #42 RX-8.
Both the #43 and #49 Mazdas had the Paddle Shifter installed for the test. And for the full 2012 season, these 2 Team Sahlen racers will run the system allows the driver to retain their hands on the steering wheel at all times.
“The Paddle Shifters were great. It took a little bit to work out the kinks of the system interfacing with the ECU. But once it was all working it was fantastic. Kind of like playing a video game. I am very grateful that Grand American has allowed Gentleman drivers the opportunity to have this on their cars. It certainly makes accomplishing all the functions that have to happen going into a corner at these high of speeds more manageable. The reality is that the GT cars are now going as fast as the DP’s were when they 1st came out in 2003.” - Stated Joe Nonnamaker
“I thought it was really enjoyable to drive. I felt more comfortable in the car, and could drive at longer stretches without growing tired and dropping off in pace. I am looking forward to the 2012 season with the Paddle Shifters.” – Added Joe Sahlen
The #42 RX-8 focused the entire weekend on race set up. With a full 8 sessions throughout the weekend, this allowed for many changes to be made to optimize for the perfect balance during the full twice around the clock event.
“The Daytona Test Days were interesting. We had a new driver in Dane Cameron who fit in straight away and went quick but also many new cars to compete with. I believe the true speed of many was not shown so we will have to wait for the race to see how things really shake out. The car handled well and we made improvements which is encouraging for returning for the race.” – Shared Catherine Crawford Wallace
“I think the Roar test went extremely well. It was great to finally get to work for 2012 and drive the #42 for the first time. We ran through a substantial amount of changes on the car and I feel like we gathered a lot of good data and Catherine and I were able to build the communication between us to ensure we have the best possible car. I feel that Wayne and I liked the same things from the car and that will serve us well through the regular season. The Rolex 24 will be tougher than ever this year but I am confident in the Sahlen's Team and our car to get a good result and start to the season.” – Further added Dane Cameron, SPEED TV’s #10 ROLEX Driver of the 2011 season
The Team Sahlen crew now has 9 working days back at their Ohio based shop to get the Mazda reprepped before heading back south again for the January 28th and 29th ROLEX 24 Hours at Daytona.
“All three RX-8s are coming home in one piece which is good. It will not be boring back at the shop but it won’t be too hectic. I know the guys can pull together and be ready come the end of January.” – Shared Jay Chapman, Team Manager
