< Back to News Home 3rd Straight Top 10 for Team Sahlen at Barber

Posted (04/12/2010) -

Team Sahlen completed their 3rd straight Top Ten finish of the 2010 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16.  The #43 Team Sahlen Mazda RX-8 completed the weekend with a 9th place finish, and the #42 sister RX-8 completed the race in 12th place.

The weekend was a very competitive event for Team Sahlen.  In both practice session 2 and 3, Team Sahlen was comfortably in the Top Ten in fastest lap times in GT.  Qualifying was a strange affair.  The preceeding DP class qualifying saw a huge wreck that delayed the start of the GT session.  This forced the GT Qualifying to be cut to 5 minutes.  This meant that all drivers would be forced to only have 2 flying laps to place a time.  Traffic forced Team Sahlen to settle for 14th and 15th in class.

The start of the race saw some very early yellow flags. Team Sahlen used these yellows to their advantage to get their required pit stops completed and to conduct their required driver change.  Wayne Nonnamaker took over for Joe Nonnamaker in the #43 Mazda.  Additionally, Joe Sahlen jumped in behind Will Nonnamaker in the #42 racer.

As the race wore on, Wayne was completing some very competitive laps, and was looking to be in a good position for a Top 5 result.  Unfortunately,  just as Wayne came in for his last fuel stop, a full course yellow flag came out.  This unfortunate bad luck put Wayne a lap down to the GT leaders.  Upon resuming back to green flag conditions, Wayne held his own with the GT leaders, continuing to establish Team Sahlen’s pace with the front runners.

"It was unfortunate that we didn't make it to the yellow flag.  But to be able to come back out after the yellow and run with the GT leaders was a real boost to the team.  We are certainly on the cusp of securing a run of Top 5 finishes.  We just need to get doing what we are doing, and refining our team to get us to that point." states Wayne Nonnamaker

Will Nonnamaker finished the #42 Mazda for Joe Sahlen, and toured the track with a respectable 12th place finish, having to suffer through a broken front and rear swaybar.

The next event for Team Sahlen will be the April 24th GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 event at Virginia International Raceway.  The event will be televised live at 2 pm est on SPEED TV.

The 2010 Team Sahlen ROLEX & CONTINENTAL Tires Series Campaigns will be supported by Mazda, Mazdaspeed, HRPWorld.com, HAWK Performance, Cool Shirt, Racetech Seats, BBS, Racing Print Media, Alcon, Mothers Polish, EMCO, TheRaceSite.com, Grassroots Motorsports, Holliday Canopies, Alcon, CM Racing, Genesis Technologies, Endurance Karting, Bell Helmets, Castrol, Ianetti Design, and SpeedSource Engineering.
