Wayne Nonnamaker enters the Barber Motorsports Park weekend in the lead of the Bob Akin GT Sportsman Award. This lead comes from Team Sahlen's strong showing at both the ROLEX 24 at Daytona (7th place) and Round 2 at Homestead Speedway (10th place). Currently Wayne leads Richard Zahn by 50 points in the standings.
"Every race that we are in the lead of the Bob Akin Award means that we are one step closer to being in the lead come the end of the season. Of course there is still 10 events to go, so it is still an open points battle for all. The Mazda RX-8 should be very good at Barber. And especially for myself, as I drove an RX-8 in last years' ROLEX Barber event." - states Wayne Nonnamaker
In 3rd place in the Bob Akin Sportsman GT Award is Will Nonnamaker, 1117 points behind Wayne.
"I am glad to see that I am still holding onto 3rd place. But the real goal is to have Wayne win the award in 2010, so whatever we can do on the team to sacrifice or push towards that goal is the focus for the rest of the season." states Will Nonnamaker
Wayne's brother Will won the inaugural Bob Akin GT Class Sportsman Award in 2005. During the season, Will competed head to head with Marc Bunting for the title. In the end Will captured the title with a fine 7th place finish at the season finale at Mexico City
Recently, Wayne & Will's father Joe nearly captured the 2007 Bob Akin GT Class Sportsman Award. During that season, Joe finished 2nd to Emil Assentato. Emil accumulated 4778 points to Joe's 4680 point tally. This mere 98 points was the closest finish in the history of the Bob Akin Award.
