Mazda concluded the 2009 KONI Challenge Series by finishing 2nd in the ST Manufacturers Championship. Honda captured the ST crown, by capturing 26 more points.
Team Sahlen was proud to have assisted in this 2nd place finish by placing as the Top Mazda at several events in 2009. The finishes by Team Sahlen kept Mazda securing in 2nd place, with hot competition from BMW, Subaru, VW, Chevrolet & Mini making ST a tough manufacturer's battle.
"We are proud of our efforts to be there to score points for Mazda. The crew did a great job in continually having our RX-8 be the fastest RX-8 in the series. We were able to make great strides and pick up speed from 2008." - states Will Nonnamaker
At the season finale, Mazda won the event with Freedom Autosports winning the event in their MX-5. Team Sahlen was not as fortunate, as motor problems in not one but two rotaries caused the team to make the trip in vain and not start the race.
"We are looking forward to racing in the KONI Challenge Series in 2010 with Mazda. Our Goal for next year is to be one of the key catalysts to helping Mazda win both the ROLEX GT and KONI ST Manufacturers' Titles. Its a tall task to accomplish, but Mazdaspeed has some fantastic teams already, and we just hope to be able to do our part to make that vision possible." - stoates Joe Sahlen
