< Back to News Home Nonnamaker Family attends Buffalo Flash game

Posted (07/14/2009) - The Nonnamaker Family of Will, Holly, Ian & Mia Nonnamaker recenlty attended the final home game of the season for the Buffalo Flash Women's Professional Soccer Team.

Getting up early Saturday Morning, the Nonnamaker children pulled out the posterboard, markers and glitter to design some "Flashy" Fan signs.  Ian made a Yellow Lightning bolt out of cardboard and Mia (with Dad's help) made a GO FLASH GO poster sign.

Starting out early Saturday Morning, the family made their way North from Canton towards Buffalo.  Encountering a huge storm in Cleveland, Will felt like he was racing at New Jersey in a white out, instead of being on the highway.  But once into New York State, the storm subsided.

Arriving at the Sahlen family home, the Nonnamakers spent the afternoon relaxing in the pool getting ready for the BIG game. Then there was a big cookout for dinner, so that everyone would be filled up before heading out to Orchard Park Field, where the Flash play all their home games.

At the game, all the Nonnamakers were outfitted in some form of Flash gear, ready to cheer on the home team.  Little Mia Nonnamaker was decked out in an extra special shirt, showing off that she was #1 fan of Alex Sahlen, #10 on the Buffalo Flash.

Entering the Saturday game, the Flash had a record of 7 Wins, 2 Loses and 2 Ties.  A victory against Divisional rival London Gryphons would greatly assist in ensuring the team would advance into the W-League Season Ending Playoffs.  The start of the game saw overcast skies, and a tight battle on field.

Four second half goals enabled the Flash to brush aside the Gryphons and maintain their push for the post-season playoffs. Recent signing Pamela Conti, of the Italian national team, made her home debut and dominated the game with her touch and class.

However, it was not until the 24th minute that the Flash opened the scoring, when Rosie Tantillo collected a clearance from Gryphons goalkeeper Jenn Wolbert and lauched her 35 yard effort over the advanced Wolbert, and into the back of the net.

It was the only notable action of the first half, but Buffalo were to prove once again, how much of a second half team they are.

In the 58th minute Jessica O'Rourke leaped to head home a bullet header from Conti's corner, to double the hosts' lead.

Three minutes later, Conti got on the scoresheet herself, with a effort showing agility and balance. As Lena Mosebo's cross came in, Conti, on the run, trapped it with her right foot, and falling to her side, rifled home with her left foot, in one fluid motion.

With just over a quarter of an hour remaining, Brooke Barbuto, who started the game in center midfield, cut in from the left hand side, and smashed a low hard shot inside the near post, to kill off the game.

However, the scoring hadn't ended there, and Tantillo was to get another notch on her goalscoring belt, in tapping home, after Wolbert had flapped at substitute Shaylyn Lawrence's cross. In doing so, Tantillo joined Maria Ruiz at the top of the Buffalo Flash goalscoring charts, with eight goals apiece.

It was the third time Buffalo had won 5-0 at home this season, and a nice way to end their home regular season play. The only way another home game could be added to the schedule is if the Flash were to finish second in the division, and thus host the third placed team on July 21st/22nd. Should they finish third, then they'll have to travel to the second placed team. That will be determined this coming weekend when the Flash make their final regular season road trips, to Ottawa on Saturday, and Laval on Sunday.

During the Halftime of the Game, Team Sahlen's Will Nonnamaker was interviewed for the Game Telecast.   The Interview as well as the full Game Video Highlights can be viewed at the following link:

At the end of the game, the Buffalo Flash Women's team stuck around and has been the custom all year, signed autographs for all their fans.  This was a very exciting experience as both Nonnamaker children had the opportunity to have their shirts signed.  Mia had an extra special experience, getting her picture taken with new Flash signee Pamela Conti.  (For her acheivements in the game, Pamela was named to the W-League's Team of the Week.)

After having a good rest overnight at the Sahlen Family home, the Nonnamaker Family made their way up to Niagra Falls to experience the immense natural wonder.  This capped off a wonderful weekend, before heading back to Canton, Ohio.
