Team Sahlen's Joe Nonnamaker ended the year at the Miller Motorsports Park 1000 km event with a strong 9th place finish, that placed him just out of reach of the Bob Akin Sportsman Award
In the end, Joe ended up just 98 points short of the Bob Akin Award. 2007 Champion, Emil Assentato, ended up with 4778 to Joe's 4680 points. That is less than 1 position per race over the course of the 13 race season.
"It was a very fun year. Building and Developing the HRPWorld.com Corvette was a big adventure for the team. Then adding to that challenge of racing for the Bob Akin Award. I am proud of the crew for what we accomplished. Next year we should be even stronger, and will be taking the fight to the competition even stronger." - states Joe Nonnamaker
For the season, Joe finished in 15th place in the GT Driver's Championship. Only once, at the ROLEX 24 Hours, did he place out of the Top 20.
Joe's son Will won the inaugural Bob Akin Award in 2005. Last year's champion was Marc Bunting, who incidentally finished 2nd to Will in the 05 Akin Award.
The Bob Akin Sportsman Award is unique in the process of awarding points. Drivers must designate themselves as true Sportsman, having not recently made their primary living from being a professional driver. Additionally, Drivers not only receive points based upon their finish, but also by the number of miles they drive in each race. This unique process rewards those drivers who achieve the significant portion of their car's race results.
The 2007 Team Sahlen ROLEX GT Campaign is support by HRPWorld.com, GOJO, ZIP Products, Kempthorn Auto Mall, HAWK Performance, Forgeline Wheels, Cool Shirt, TheRaceSite.com, TheRaceMarket.com, Grassroots Motorsports, HOTSEAT, Holliday Canopies, Alcon, CM Racing, Joe Gibbs Motor Oil, Genesis Technologies, Endurance Karting, Racetech Seats, and Corsa Performance.
