US Filter - Planet Earth Motorsports driver Wayne Nonnamaker was featured in the Speed Freakz section of the June issue of Sports Car magazine (#40,000 circulation). Every month, a young Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) member is profiled. Wayne was chosen as the June profile, both for his on and off track achievements.
Wayne started racing while he was a Junior in High School, under the then new Speed Freakz program, allowing aspiring drivers to get a start at an earlier age. The SCCA started the program due to the large decline in youth participation in the sport. Many Gen X racers were moving towards go-karts and import drag racing. Six years on and there has now been a dramatic youth shift in the SCCA membership.
On the track, Wayne has steadily progressed through grassroots racing to the top levels of professional sports car racing. In 1997, Wayne won the SCCA NEOHIO Region SSA crown and finished 2nd in the SCCA Central Division SSA points. In 1999, Wayne stepped up to professional racing where he won the Motorola Cup Touring Championship with his brother Will. Currently, Wayne races in the Grand Am Cup Compact class in the Comptech Sport - Acura Integra GS-R. He is 3rd in the Drivers' Championship behind factory HART Honda drivers - who won the 2000 championship.
Off the track, Wayne is the creator and editor of TheRaceSite.com - The On-line Sports Car Racing Magazine. Wayne feels that TheRaceSite.com will be the place where he can have the biggest impact on helping Sports Car Racing grow in North America. The site has been on line since December of 1999. Through Wayne's efforts, an informational void has been filled, where racing news, editorial and race results for all forms of sports car racing can be viewed in one central source.
"I have been very fortunate to have such a supportive corporate partners, family and team that allows me to strive to new levels both on and off the track." States Wayne, "Without partners US Filter, ORISON Marketing L.L.C., Comptech Sport, & Acura, our entire Planet Earth Motorsports campaign would not exist. There is still so much for me to learn both as a driver and as a part of the media. Its just great that the SCCA was able to start the Speed Freakz program so that individuals such as myself have a chance to get such an early jump on their development curve."
